Workshop Summary: Carbon Management as the Key to Synthetic Fuels

Carbon management (CM)—understood as an integrated value chain comprising CO₂ capture, transport, utilization (CCU), and storage (CCS)—is a key factor for decarbonization and thus for the competitiveness of mobility and energy-intensive industries. Furthermore, CM contributes in the medium to long term to ensuring the supply of non-fossil carbon to the raw materials and chemical industries. The workshop discussion identified three key takeaways:

  • Without carbon management, the market ramp-up of synthetic fuels is not feasible or can only be achieved very slowly;
  • Without synthetic fuels, CCU lacks a key lead market;
  • the implementation of carbon management currently fails less due to individual technologies than due to a lack of system integration and political-regulatory clarity.

All results and key takeaways from the workshop can be found in the eight-page publication by ZSW Stuttgart. The paper is available for download here.

Short study: Water – water availability, supply routes, and infrastructure

Publication

A new short study by the focus area Supply Chain is the first to specifically examine water requirements and water availability for electrolysis and PtL plants. The aim is to create a sound understanding of technical requirements, environmental aspects, and infrastructural prerequisites.The study thus provides an important basis for sustainable and scalable PtL production in the context of growing regional differences in water availability. The paper is available for download here.

Short study: Status of technology development in the supply chain sector

Publication

Over the past few months, the Supply Chain innovation focus team has taken an in-depth look at the current state of technology in the supply chain sector. The results of this analysis were published in a short paper in June 2024. This provides a comprehensive overview of the development status of technologies in the areas of CO₂ provision, electrolysis and the availability and demand for resources such as water and renewable electricity. The paper is available for download here.
