The study, conducted by DLR, examines how the use of 100% Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (SPK-SAF) can help reduce the non-CO₂ impacts of aviation. These effects are caused primarily by contrails and are becoming increasingly significant alongside CO₂ emissions.
The study focuses on the question of how the transition to a completely aromatics-free aviation fuel can be successfully implemented at German airports. To this end, current fuel logistics were analyzed, relevant stakeholders were interviewed, and challenges along the entire value chain—from SAF production and airport infrastructure to certification, flight operations, and market and regulatory issues—were examined.
The results show that a targeted supply of the fuel at major airports such as Frankfurt and Munich could be particularly beneficial, while a book-and-claim system represents a better alternative for smaller locations. At the same time, the study identifies key prerequisites for a successful rollout—ranging from certification and infrastructure expansion to the further development of the regulatory framework.
